Staal, Malkin propel Penguins past Sabres

Nov 16, 2008 - 5:20 AM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Jordan Staal snapped a tie with 4:33 remaining in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins scored four times in the session to extend their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

Evgeni Malkin stretched both his points and assists streaks to 13 games by netting a goal and setting up three others for the Penguins.

Rookie defenseman Alex Goligoski recorded a goal and an assist, Ruslan Fedotenko also tallied and Staal added the empty-netter with 24 seconds remaining.

Petr Sykora notched two assists and Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 21 shots for Pittsburgh.

Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek scored and Ryan Miller made 20 saves for Buffalo, which fell to 1-3-1 in its last five games.

"It's frustrating. We played really solid for 50 minutes and didn't play well for 10," Pominville said. "We gave them a couple of rush opportunities, and they made some plays and (the puck) ended up in the back of our net."

"I thought we panicked a little bit," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We went down when we shouldn't have went down and it opened up a seam, and they got the tying goal. We had (a) breakdown in coverage two shifts later that allowed Staal to be right in front of the net, which we hadn't done all night. You make mistakes like that, you are going to lose games."

With the game tied at 2-2, Cooke set up Staal in the high slot, and the second overall pick of the 2006 draft skated in and wristed a shot past Miller for his sixth goal in as many games.

"I knew I had been playing good hockey. I knew it was only a matter of time for me," Staal said of his recent success. "This team seems to never give up, and when we get the momentum, it's kind of scary."

Fedotenko added an insurance tally just 62 seconds later, when he received a feed from Malkin and beat Miller for his fourth tally of the season. Staal then sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

"We don't panic, that's the main thing," Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien said. "We play our game. We didn't want to change anything.

"I thought the second period was a good period for us. We took a bad penalty in the end, and they scored on it. Other than that, I thought we had the momentum in the second that carried over to the third. If we keep playing like this, I'm not going to say we'll win every game, but we'll put ourselves in a good position to win the game."

After Pominville opened the scoring 8:14 into the first period, Malkin leveled the contest with 8:53 remaining in the second, collecting a rebound and wristing a shot past Miller for his seventh of the season and third in as many games. The Russian has six tallies and 21 assists during his points streak.

"My teammates are good," Malkin matter-of-factly said of his streak.

Vanek regained the lead for the Sabres with 46 seconds remaining in the session. The Austrian received a goal-mouth feed from Clarke MacArthur and slipped it past Fleury for his 13th goal, tying him for the league lead with Washington's Alexander Semin.

Goligoski knotted the contest with 8:17 remaining in the third period.

With his team on the power play, Malkin faked a shot from the blue line before finding Sidney Crosby in the right faceoff circle. The captain alertly dished to a streaking Goligoski, who wristed the puck past Miller for his fourth tally.

"It was good to get a couple of goals on the power play," Goligoski said. "We were working hard to keep possession of the puck (during the power plays), and it paid off."
