Hiller, Ducks blank Kings

Nov 17, 2008 - 5:13 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Jonas Hiller stopped all 29 shots he faced to record his first career NHL shutout as the Anaheim Ducks recorded a 2-0 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

Corey Perry extended his points streak to three games with a first-period goal and defenseman Bret Hedican also tallied as Anaheim defeated Los Angeles for the eighth time in the last 10 meetings - including the last five at the Honda Center.

Erik Ersberg finished with 24 saves for Los Angeles, which has dropped two in a row after a four-game winning streak.

"I don't think it was the kind of game we wanted to play," Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell said. "We weren't sharp mentally. All 20 of us didn't seem to be moving our feet. We seemed to be standing still with the puck. We were kind of reacting; we just didn't seem sharp tonight, as a whole."

Hiller stopped 14 shots in the first period, six in the second and nine in the third to complete the third shutout of the season for the Ducks. Jean-Sebastien Giguere recorded both of those blankings - including a 1-0 triumph over the Kings on November 4.

"It counts as a team win," Hiller said. "It's a great feeling for a goalie. I'm definitely happy it finally worked out. ... You just try to concentrate, focus on the next shot and try to stop it. I didn't have too many worries about what could happen. For sure, you sometimes check the clock and how many minutes are left."

"He gave us the goaltending that was required," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "He made some stops that prove again that he's an NHL-quality goaltender. It was his night tonight. We're appreciative of his performance."

Perry opened the scoring with 8:24 remaining in the second period.

Ryan Getzlaf wristed a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle which Ersberg denied, but the rebound trickled out in front to Perry, who tucked the puck past the netminder for his sixth goal of he season.

Defenseman Bret Hedican doubled the Ducks' advantage with 4:20 remaining in the third period.

Playing in his 998th career game, the 38-year-old Hedican unleashing a slap shot from just outside the left faceoff circle for his first goal of the season.

"The shot was just one of those things where it popped out. I let it go and found the net," Hedican said. "I think he didn't expect it right away, and it snuck in. It was wobbling in, kind of a knuckleball - Phil Niekro-style. I'll take them any way I can get them right now."

"I didn't pick it up really at first, and then it kind of dropped down, kind of a knuckle puck," Ersberg said. "I was pretty far out, so maybe I should've stopped it anyways. That was a tough goal for the team too. It (stinks)."
