Peltonen leads Panthers past Hurricanes

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Florida Panthers still have a great deal of work to do, but they will relish any win over a division foe.

Ville Peltonen recorded a goal and an assist and Gregory Campbell notched the game-winner late in the second period as the Florida Panthers posted a 3-2 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday in a battle of Southeast Division rivals.

David Booth also tallied and Tomas Vokoun turned aside 27 shots for Florida, which snapped a two-game losing streak and successfully began a three-game homestand after playing eight of its previous 10 contests on the road.

"We keep stressing hard work; follow the shot and go to the net," Peltonen said. "This really doesn't change much about our situation. We just have to stay aggressive."

Tuomo Ruutu and Chad LaRose each tallied and Sergei Samsonov had two assists, but the Hurricanes fell for the second straight game after winning three in a row.

Campbell snapped a 2-2 tie with 2:18 left in the second period, deflecting a wrist shot from Peltonen in the slot.

"We went after them to get the lead and protected the lead," Florida coach Peter DeBoer said. "That was so important for us to respond like that after they rallied from two goals down."

Celebrating his 24th birthday, Booth opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the first when he took a drop pass from Nathan Horton and fired a wrist shot from the far circle past Michael Leighton. The assist was the 100th of Horton's career.

"It (the goal) was a nice thing to have happen, especially today," Booth said. "The most important thing was getting the win and turning things in the right direction again."

Florida took advantage of aggressive play in front of the net to make it 2-0 just under nine minutes later. Leighton made the initial save on a shot from Radek Dvorak, but Peltonen was at the doorstep to deposit the rebound.

"Two guys crossed in front of me, and I didn't realize (Peltonen) was going to shoot it," Leighton said. "By the time I could see the puck, it was already halfway by me."

Vokoun, who has lost 10 of 14 decisions already this season, had a relatively mild period as he faced only seven shots. The Panthers, meanwhile, took 10.

But the easy times quickly vanished as Carolina came out with a vengeance in the following session.

It took the Hurricanes just over two minutes to tie the game with a rush on net in the Panthers' zone resulting in two goals from close range.

"We had a good stretch (of minutes) there but we couldn't establish a cycle," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "There were not a lot of clean opportunities by either side tonight."

Ruutu needed only 25 seconds to cut the deficit in half with a flip shot past Vokoun from the left side for his seventh goal of the season. Just 1:48 later, LaRose pulled Carolina even with a tip-in off a wrister by Eric Staal after Vokoun was caught out of the crease.

"It was a good (second) period for us. We tried to duplicate it in the third," LaRose said. "We can't keep coming from behind like that. It's a tough loss."

Carolina continued to apply the pressure and held Florida without a shot on goal over the first eight-plus minutes of the second.

"We found a way to weather the storm," DeBoer said. "We kept going at them hard and once we got the lead we played even harder. I was real happy with the effort."

Defenseman Bryan McCabe, whose six-game point streak ended, said he would rather see his team establish a point streak in the standings.

"It's so important to turn the tide now," McCabe said. "We have an opportunity to get something positive going, and we might as well establish them right here at home this week."
