Bourque leads offensive outburst as Flames rout Kings

Nov 26, 2008 - 6:21 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Rene Bourque scored twice and Curtis Glenncross had a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Captain Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist and Craig Conroy added three assists for the Flames, who have won three their last four games. David Moss and former King Michael Cammalleri also scored for Calgary.

Alexander Frolov and Anze Kopitar scored for Los Angeles, which has lost 10 of its last 12 games here.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots for the Flames, who outshot the Kings, 35-25, and were in control from the start.

"Well, Calgary is a better team than we are. That's all there was to it tonight," Kings coach Terry Murray said.

"They beat us to every area in the ice, shots, goals, they controlled the boards, they made all kinds of plays whenever they wanted to make plays and they are a much better team than we are."

Cammalleri, who spent the past four seasons with Los Angeles, put Calgary up 1-0 when his wrist shot from the slot beat goaltender Erik Ersberg at 9:11 of the first.

"It's nice, it's a huge confidence builder when you see the puck going in the net," Cammalleri said. "A lot of guys saw the puck going in the net tonight. I think it helps our game for sure.

"It's a nice feeling when you're skating by their bench on the way to your bench and you just got one. It's something a little more special."

Bourque made it 2-0 with 1:31 left in the first.

Iginla and Glenncross scored a little more than six minutes apart in the second as the lead grew to 4-0.

Glenncross' tally chased Ersberg, who stopped 14 shots before giving way to Jason LaBarbera.

He fared no better. After Frolov got the Kings on the board at 3:38 of the first, Moss and Bourque each tallied. Moss scored his fourth with a man advantage just 20 seconds later, and Bourque made it 6-1 at 9:20 of the period.

"They (the Bourque- Glenncross -Conroy line) produced some offense, which was really good for us," Flames coach Mike Keenan said.

"We played well as a line, both Curtis and Connie had terrific games," Bourque said. "We didn't turn the puck over, we were able to get the puck in deep. My second goal, they just made a great play and it didn't take much effort to bang one in."

It could have been a lot worse for Los Angeles, as Calgary converted just 2-of-9 power play chances.

"We ended up with nine power plays versus two against I believe and that makes a big difference in any game for any team," Keenan said.

"If you can stay out of the penalty box and certainly take advantage of your power plays, and at the same time it takes a lot of players out of the game when you have to kill that many penalties on the other side. It was a fairly consistent effort throughout."

LaBarbera stopped 17 shots for the Kings, who were 0-for-2 with a man advantage.

"We were shorthanded too many times and I think that's obviously a big thing in today's game," Los Angeles right wing Wayne Simmonds said. "You have to watch your sticks or you're going to be in the box, and that's when most goals happen."
