Horcoff rallies Oilers past Blues

Nov 30, 2008 - 12:17 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Shawn Horcoff scored a goal and set up two others as the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday afternoon.

Dustin Penner had a goal and assist and Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves for the Oilers, who avoided their sixth loss in seven games by overcoming a 2-0 deficit after the first period.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to start, that's for sure," Horcoff said. "We were down 2-0 early, but I thought the guys did a great job competing all night. I think we out-competed them."

"I have to give a lot of credit to the guys in here," Roloson said. "I was just trying to give my guys a chance to win. It's good to get rid of the negative energy from the last couple of games."

Brad Boyes and Patrik Berglund each scored and David Perron had two assists for the Blues, who outshot Edmonton by a 28-22 margin.

"I've been missing the team, it's no fun to stay home and watch the games on television," said Berglund, who had been sidelined since November 20. "I was pretty pumped up and I think I had a pretty good solid game."

Andrew Cogliano started the comeback for the Oilers with 4:57 remaining in the second period, notching his sixth goal of the season to halve the deficit.

Defenseman Sheldon Souray then beat St. Louis goaltender Manny Legace with a slap shot from the left point that tied the contest at 2-2 with 90 seconds left in the middle session.

"It was a good first period and then awful after that. Awful," Legace said. "We had a great first period and after that we kind of disappeared. We can't put a full sixty (minutes) together, and when we do we're one of the better teams in the league, that's the funny part."

Horcoff, who fought David Backes in the first period, set up Penner's go-ahead goal just 20 ticks into the third period. During a scramble in front of the net, Horcoff made a touch pass to Penner, who stuffed it in to the open side of the goal.

"It was a good, gritty comeback," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "It's not the way we drew it out to start but we battled back hard.

"It was good the Horc(off) stepped up and he's not known to be a fighter, but he normally gets in one a year. And they got him going and he played his best game of the year by a long shot."

Less than three minutes later, Horcoff completed the Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist and fight) with his sixth goal of the season. He took a pass from Penner and fired a slap shot past Legace, who finished with 18 saves.

Boyes and Berglund scored in a 47-second span to provide the Blues with the early two-goal edge in the opening session.
