Modano propels Stars past Oilers

Dec 1, 2008 - 5:29 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Mike Modano scored a power-play goal to snap a tie with 2:21 remaining in the third period as the Dallas Stars recorded a 4-3 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

The career goal leader among American-born players with 537 tallies, Modano became the 31st player in NHL history with 1,300 career points.

"I've been lucky and fortunate to be around this long, I couldn't have asked for a better organization," Modano said.

"When you thought (Modano) was all done with milestones and ceremonies, another one creeps in on you," said Marty Turco, who turned aside 25 shots.

Sean Avery and Mike Ribeiro scored, Toby Petersen tallied for the first time since March 2007 and Brad Richards notched two assists for Dallas, which improved to 3-5-2 in its last 10 games.

Kyle Brodziak tallied twice, Ales Hemsky netted a power-play goal to extend his points streak to five games and defenseman Sheldon Souray notched three assists for Edmonton, which fell to 2-5-1 in its last eight games.

"It felt good to contribute," Brodziak said. "But at the end of the day, we didn't get the win, and that's all that matters."

Making his first start since November 13, rookie Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers finished with 22 saves the Oilers.

"I wasn't sharp when the game started," Drouin-Deslauriers said. "I have to prepare myself better. I felt better as the game went along."

After Brodziak leveled the contest at 3-3 with his second goal of the game with 3:22 remaining in the third period, Modano netted the eventual game-winning tally just 61 seconds later.

With his team on the power play after Souray was whistled for hooking, Modano accepted a feed in the slot from Richards and wristed the puck past Drouin-Deslauriers for his 10th goal of the season.

"When you get passes like that, you feel like you are 28 (years old)," Modano said.

"Pretty good shot, that's a great shot," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. "It's great to see him score a goal that was so meaningful."

Modano also assisted on Ribeiro's power-play goal in the first period to open the scoring.
