Frolov, Quick stymie Coyotes

Dec 28, 2008 - 5:41 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Alexander Frolov scored two goals and rookie Jonathan Quick made 26 saves as the Los Angeles Kings cruised to a 4-0 triumph over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.

Raitis Ivanans also tallied and Jarret Stoll added a power-play goal, while defenseman Kyle Quincey and Teddy Purcell each notched two assists for the Kings, who used a three-goal outburst in the first period to earn their second win in seven contests.

Quick turned aside six shots in the first, 11 in the second and nine in the third to record his second shutout of the season. The 22-year-old blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-0, on Tuesday.

"You just want to give your team a chance to win every night," Quick said. "The team played great in front of me and that made it a little bit easier.

"I have to just stop the puck. That is all I really have to do and I am getting a lot of help from the defense and the (penalty killing unit) and it is making it easier on me. We saw quite of few PKs in the third period and the team did a great job."

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 26 shots for Phoenix, but fell to 6-1-0 in his career against Los Angeles.

The Coyotes defeated the Kings, 2-1, in the first set of the a home-and-home series on Friday.

"It was good response from the game last night," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "We needed to come out ready to play and we are a good team when have 20 guys playing. We are not a team that can have two lines and three defenseman play - we need everybody."

Ivanans opened the scoring with 5:54 left in the first by firing a slap shot in front of the blue line and Frolov struck for the first time 3 1/2 minutes later, beating Bryzgalov with a tip-in while positioned on the doorstep with the man advantage.

"You always want to get the first goal of the game," Murray said. "It was important to come out hard and get pucks to the net and give ourselves and opportunity to at least get that first goal. Then we had a couple of good looks on the power play and had good movement. It was a good start."

Stoll capped the rally with 20 seconds remaining in the session with a hard shot from the right faceoff circle on the power play.

Frolov increased the Kings' lead to 4-0 with his 16th tally of the season 8:56 into the second, following a series of passes from Michal Handzus and defenseman Peter Harrold.

"We knew we had to improve our play from last night," Frolov said. "We put it deep worked on our forecheck and stuck to our system."

Los Angeles outshot Phoenix, 30-26, overall - and by a 13-6 margin in the first. The Kings also held the Coyotes to a dismal 0-for-9 mark on the power play.

"I don't even know where to begin," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "We had a power play early in the game, we failed to pretty much even get in their zone on that power play and set the tone for the hockey game.

"Our power play was a negative tonight. The odd time that we did get an opportunity, the goaltender made a good save."
