Iginla, Cammalleri shine as Flames burn Oilers
Jan 1, 2009 - 7:44 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Captain Jarome Iginla and Michael Cammalleri split the spotlight in the latest installment of the "Battle of Alberta."Iginla and Cammalleri each recorded two goals and three assists as the Calgary Flames vanquished the Edmonton Oilers, 6-4, on Wednesday.
Defenseman Adrian Aucoin and Dustin Boyd netted goals and Daymond Langkow and Craig Conroy notched three assists apiece to help the Flames extend their winning streak to four games.
"It was a fun night," Iginla said. "(Conroy) gave me a great pass on the first goal. I had pretty much a wide open net. It's been a while since I got one, so it was a big boost. We were able to draw some key power plays at some key times and we were able to capitalize and our penalty kill was very good at some huge times for us. ... It feels good.
"It's a good way to end the year, and it's a team effort. Also, to beat the Oilers for the first time for the year is great."
Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 28 shots - including 16 in the third period - for Calgary, which has also won six of its last seven.
"It was one of those nights," Kiprusoff said. "I didn't do too much for the first two periods and our forwards were flying. (Iginla) and those guys won the game for us tonight. We were the better team tonight. They scored some weird goals and had bounces. That's the only reason it stayed close for so long."
Blue-liner Denis Grebeshkov scored and had three assists and fellow defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, Robert Nilsson and Erik Cole scored for the Oilers, who have dropped two straight after posting a three-game winning streak.
"We had a lot of looks tonight," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We played a pretty good with the exception of our inability to kill a penalty. It's killed us all year long. The faceoffs we were chasing a lot tonight. We couldn't kill a penalty. I didn't think we played great in the first period, but the second and third periods were pretty good periods for us."
On October 17, Kiprusoff fizzled in a 4-3 loss in Calgary. The next night, he struggled again by allowing three goals less than four minutes apart in the second period as the Oilers went on to win, 3-2, and sweep the home-and-home set.
Those defeats were part of a season-opening five-game stretch in which Kiprusoff, who leads the NHL with 22 victories, went 1-3-1 with a 4.37 goals-against average.
Things were surely different in this one, since the Finnish netminder received plenty of support from his offensive unit.
Iginla struck for the second time 5:50 into the third period, firing a wrister from the slot that beat Dwayne Roloson and gave Calgary a 4-3 lead - one it would not give up.
"A big night for the entire line and he certainly set the tempo for us," Flames coach Mike Keenan said. "He was certainly a big part of us being able to come from behind and getting some offensive momentum and getting the win."
Boyd followed 95 seconds later by netting his eighth goal of the season and Cammalleri deposited an empty-netter with 77 seconds left to secure the victory.
"We're excited. This is New Year's," Cammalleri said. "It's a fun night to win. We've been rolling a little bit lately and we've been gathering some points and we definitely want it to continue."
Cole registered his sixth of the season with eight seconds remaining.
Iginla and Cammalleri each tallied in the first, only to see their efforts negated since Kiprusoff was solved by Grebeshkov and Nilsson in the session.
"The first goal that he had, I thought was a breakdown," MacTavish said. "The second goal, his power play goal, was a breakdown. We're desperate. I think that's one thing that's plagued us. He got free, and other than that, he's a good player. He's the main focal point of our meeting, I'll tell you that."
Visnovsky put Edmonton ahead, 3-2, just 85 seconds into the second, but Aucoin beat Roloson with eight minutes left in the period to forge another tie.
Roloson finished with 31 saves.
