Regin, Fisher fuel Senators over Blues
Jan 30, 2009 - 5:44 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Peter Regin made his first NHL goal a memorable one.The rookie scored with just under two minutes remaining in the third period to snap a tie as the Ottawa Senators recorded a 3-1 triumph over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
Mike Fisher added both a shorthanded and empty-net goal and rookie Brian Elliott made 22 saves for Ottawa, which improved to 6-14-3 on the road this season.
"For once on the road, we played 60 minutes of hard-working hockey," Senators coach Craig Hartsburg said. "It's what we've been asking for, and we got it tonight."
Brad Winchester scored and Chris Mason turned aside 27 shots for St. Louis, which fell to 3-1-1 in its last five games.
"We certainly made them work for what they did get, but they got chances they shouldn't have. That was a team we could have beaten," Mason said. "We played a lot harder in the third period, but it stinks with the result. We've let a lot of games get away like that this year, and to let them score with two minutes left kind of leaves a bit of a mark."
"We had them right there to beat them, and we didn't get it done," St. Louis defenseman Jeff Woywitka added. "We were playing well before the break and, unfortunately, we didn't get it done."
With 1:57 remaining in the third and the contest tied at 1-1, Regin skated around the net and wristed a shot that beat Mason just inside the right goalpost.
"I got around quicker than I thought I would, then I tried to shoot it high but missed and the puck went low," the 22-year-old Regin said. "Often, that's how you score. You miss the puck a little. You miss, but you make anyway. It was strange, but it's still my first goal, and it's something I've dreamed about since I was a kid - a dream come true for me."
"Peter showed speed, showed skill and good poise with the puck," Hartsburg said. "He a gifted player and could do many great things in this league."
Recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League on Tuesday, Regin is the fifth player born in Denmark to appear in an NHL game, joining Poul Popiel, Frans Nielsen, Jannik Hansen and Mikkel Boedker.
Fisher added an empty-netter with 33 seconds remaining to seal the win and cap his first multi-goal performance of the season. It was his seventh goal of the campaign and fourth in his last six games.
With his team shorthanded, Fisher opened the scoring midway through the first period. After collecting a loose puck, he wristed a shot past Mason from the slot with 9:54 remaining in the session.
"We did a good job of forechecking on that first PK, and then (captain Daniel Alfredsson) picked up that loose puck, kept it alive behind the net, and finally I had a chance to do something with it," Fisher said. "It was a heck of a way to start, but we ended up making our defense work too hard. Thankfully, Peter made a play at the end."
Winchester leveled the contest just under three minutes later, when he tapped Woywitka's centering pass past Elliott for his eighth tally of the campaign.
"They caught our marking around the net a little off on the first goal, but otherwise, we hung tough," Elliott said. "We need to understand that we need do this more on the road."
The Senators had a chance to regain the lead while on a two-man advantage in the waning moments of the middle period, but All-Star Dany Heatley's slap shot hit the right goalpost.
