Rinne, Predators topple Coyotes

Feb 4, 2009 - 5:18 AM
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Rookie Pekka Rinne turned aside 29 shots as the Nashville Predators recorded a 2-1 triumph over the struggling Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.

Captain Jason Arnott and Radek Bonk scored for Nashville, which improved to 3-1-0 in its last four games.

"We do pretty well when we get the first goal, and that is the way it happened tonight," Arnott said. "We played really well, we played disciplined, and we capitalized on a few of our opportunities.

"We will take the two points because every point is crucial."

Joel Perrault netted his first goal of the season and snapped Phoenix's scoreless streak at 187 minutes, 6 seconds, dating to a second-period goal in a 7-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks last Tuesday.

Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside 22 shots for the Coyotes, who fell to 1-5-0 in their last six contests.

"We're disappointed about the loss, there's no question. It is a tough loss for us tonight," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "I thought our guys played really hard, and I was very proud of our effort. I thought our guys did everything possible to win this hockey game tonight.

"We were strong defensively, our goaltending was good (and) our penalty killing was good. I thought we played a really strong game, and unfortunately we came out with a loss in the end."

Arnott opened the scoring 2:50 into the first period.

After defenseman Dan Hamhuis' shot from the right faceoff circle was denied by Bryzgalov, the rebound caromed out to Arnott, who backhanded the puck past the netminder for his team-leading 17th goal of the season.

Bonk doubled the advantage just 45 seconds into the second period after catching the Coyotes in a line change.

Joel Ward fed Bonk in the neutral zone before snapping a low wrist shot past Bryzgalov for his sixth goal of the season.

"I got a good angle on my blade and it went up," Bonk said. "I'm glad I was there to help us get the win."

"I thought Bonky was really good tonight," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "He made a great play on the goal, and he was really solid defensively. He played a really heavy game where he used his size and weight. He was one of our best guys."

Perrault cut the deficit in half 4:40 into the third period, snapping the Coyotes' pronounced scoreless streak in the process.

"It feels good personally to score," Perrault said. "We missed too many chances and that is the story of our last few games. We played well and the effort was there for us. Maybe we just need to relax a little bit and score some goals."

The Coyotes, however, were unable to net the equalizer.

"They had a little push there at the end, the last 10 minutes or so," Rinne said. "When you are leading by one goal, they are going to put pucks to the net and try to create traffic. The guys did a great job in front of me. They blocked a lot of shots."
