Plekanec scores twice as Canadiens edge Sabres

Sep 24, 2008 - 1:48 AM ROBERVAL, Quebec (Ticker) -- Tomas Plekanec scored a pair of goals Tuesday, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 preseason triumph over the Buffalo Sabres at the Benoit Levesque Arena.

Plekanec opened the scoring midway through the first period, banking in a shot from the right corner off goaltender Patrick Lalime. After Andrei Kostitsyn doubled Montreal's lead with 6:23 remaining in the middle session, Plekanec put a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle just inside the left goalpost late in the period for his third goal of the preseason and a 3-0 lead.

The Czech's second goal proved crucial as the Sabres attempted a third-period comeback. Derek Roy got Buffalo on the scoreboard just 73 seconds into the session and Nathan Gerbe cut the deficit to 3-2 at 9:14, beating netminder Marc Denis to the glove side with a slap shot from the left circle.

Kostitsyn also recorded an assist for Montreal.
