Parise lifts Devils over Rangers

NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The renewal of the rivalry between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers apparently will have to wait until the regular season.

Zach Parise scored two goals, including one which snapped a tie in the final minute of the first period, as the Devils posted a 3-2 preseason victory over the Rangers in the clubs' first meeting since last season's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Both teams started their No. 1 goaltenders, with four-time Vezina Trophy winner Martin Brodeur of the Devils and Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers playing just under 31 minutes apiece.

Parise, one of nine regulars in New Jersey's lineup, broke a 1-1 deadlock with 24.4 seconds to go in the first. He collected a loose puck off the end boards and chipped it over Lundqvist for his first preseason goal.

Parise padded the lead with 3:20 left in the third, when he poked defenseman Paul Martin's centering feed past goalie Antoine Lafleur. That enabled the Devils to withstand a late goal by Petr Nedved as they squared their preseason mark at 1-1-0.

Trying to earn a roster spot with his former team, Nedved also added an assist for the Rangers, who fell to 1-3-0.
