Special teams shine as Penguins edge Maple Leafs
Sep 25, 2008 - 2:29 AM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Petr Sykora and Ruslan Fedotenko scored power-play goals in the first period and Evgeni Malkin added a shorthanded tally in the second as the Pittsburgh Penguins held on for a 3-2 preseason victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.Dany Sabourin made 28 saves for Pittsburgh, which will visit Toronto for another exhibition contest on Friday.
En route to making the Stanley Cup Finals last season, the Penguins had the fourth-best power play in the league. They showed they still are capable of capitalizing with the man-advantage despite the absences of center Sidney Crosby (groin) and defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder.
Sykora scored his third goal of the preseason 2:05 into the game and Fedotenko tallied with 12:08 remaining in the opening period as Pittsburgh scored on two of its first three power-play opportunities.
Malkin, who finished second in the league in scoring with 106 points last season, netted a shorthanded goal 70 seconds into the second period to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.
The Maple Leafs got on the board with 4:38 left to play in the contest, when Alexei Ponikarovsky scored a power-play goal. Mikhail Grabovski tallied with 11 seconds remaining to provide the game's final margin.
Justin Pogge turned aside 18 shots for Toronto.
