Newcomers help Flames burn Coyotes
Sep 26, 2008 - 4:24 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- If the Calgary Flames expect to skate toward their fifth consecutive playoff appearance, their offseason acquisitions will need to ease the pain of losing a handful of key cogs. The club did a valiant job in the infant stages of that transition on Thursday as newcomers Michael Cammalleri and Andre Roy each scored, lifting the Flames to a 3-1 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Matthew Lombardi opened the scoring for Calgary, beating goaltender Mikael Tellqvist for a power-play goal 9:37 into the first period.
Cammalleri extended the advantage 95 seconds into the middle session, converting a pass from captain Jarome Iginla. The Flames traded the 17th overall pick in this past June's draft to the Los Angeles Kings for Cammalleri, who is expected to essentially replace the departed Alex Tanguay.
Roy capped the scoring 7 1/2 minutes later.
Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all nine shots he faced before being replaced by Curtis McElhinney midway through the second. McElhinney, who made 13 saves, allowed only a tally by Viktor Tikhonov - the 28th overall pick in June - at 2:51 of the final period.
Tellqvist turned aside 21 shots for the Coyotes.
