Selanne hat trick leads Ducks past Coyotes

Oct 4, 2008 - 5:01 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks are happy to have Teemu Selanne back on the ice.

Selanne registered a hat trick to lead the Ducks to a 4-1 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday.

Selanne, Anaheim's all-time leading scorer, entered training camp on a tryout contract as the Ducks attempted to trade pricey defenseman Mathieu Schneider. The deal finally went through last Friday, as Schneider was shipped to the Atlanta Thrashers, opening a roster spot for the veteran right wing, who inked a two-year contract two days later.

Despite entering his 16th campaign, Selanne has shown no signs of slowing. His hat trick gives him five goals this preseason - tied for most in the NHL with a number of players, including teammate Corey Perry.

Defenseman Scott Niedermayer and Brendan Morrison each finished with three assists as the Ducks improved to 5-1-1 in the preseason.

Selanne opened the scoring midway through the first period, when his attempted pass to Morrison hit a body in front and found its way into the net. But the Coyotes tied the game 92 seconds later as Peter Mueller beat goaltender Jonas Hiller with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle at 11:48 for his fourth preseason tally.

Selanne struck again at 7:10 of the second, this time on the power play. With the Ducks holding a 4-on-3 advantage, Selanne scored on a quick snap shot from the left faceoff dot that went between goaltender Mikael Tellqvist's pads.

Perry extended the lead to 3-1 with another man-advantage goal with 6:36 left in the period, and Selanne capped the scoring at 2:46 of the third with a slap shot that beat former Ducks teammate Ilya Bryzgalov.

Hiller made 19 saves for Anaheim, which outshot Phoenix, 32-20.

Tellqvist allowed three goals on 22 shots over two periods before being replaced by Bryzgalov, who made nine saves in the third.

Captain Shane Doan collected 16 minutes in penalties for the Coyotes, who went 0-for-6 on the power play.
