Moss, Regehr lift Flames over Kings

Dec 20, 2006 - 7:08 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- A pair of first-timers helped the Calgary Flames keep rolling.

David Moss and defenseman Richie Regehr each notched their first career goals to help lift the Flames to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Calgary, which improved to 7-2-1 in its last 10 games, got a goal and an assist from Tony Amonte, Kristian Huselius and Daymond Langkow. Jamie McLennan made 27 saves in his first start since November 26.

"It's more challenging staying ready mentally than physically, our practices run pretty good and keep me sharp," McLennan said. "You just don't know when you're going to get the call to start. The Kings have a dangerous team and they had some good chances, so I'm happy with the win."

"Throughout the season we're going to need some wins out of Jamie to support Miikka (Kiprusoff)," Calgary coach Jim Playfair said. "We're on a six-game road trip with a lot of travel, so it was a good spot to start him, and I decided that a few games ago."

The Kings fell to 1-3-1 in its last five home games.

Regehr gave the Flames a 2-0 lead at 4:10 of the first period on the power play, when his slap shot from the point sailed through a maze of players past goaltender Dan Cloutier.

Moss' goal was the eventual game-winner, giving Calgary a 4-2 lead at 17:16 of the second period. He redirected Dustin Boyd's cross-crease pass past Cloutier.

"There's always apprehension when you get that many young players on the ice at the same time, but I think it really worked to our advantage," Playfair said. "We got a lot of juice out of our young players tonight on short notice, and they gave a nice effort. I thought Moss and Boyd playing with Stephane Yelle was a good line."

Rookie Anze Kopitar had two goals and an assist and Dustin Brown had a power-play tally for the Kings.

Kopitar has 10 goals and 21 assists this season, and his 31 points is second among NHL rookies. Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin leads all rookies with 32 points.

Amonte's goal, which came at 1:24 of the first period, was a shot from the blue line that glanced off Cloutier's glove into the net.

"I was trying to get the puck on the net," Amonte said. "We need to get more rubber on the net as a team. Those shots don't go in very often, but I'll take it."

"It was not a good way to start the game," Cloutier said. "We did a good job in battling back after that. We made some key mistakes that cost us in the second period, but overall I thought that we had a good second period."

Jarome Iginla had two assists for the Flames and has nine goals and 11 assists in his last 10 games.
