Vyborny, Fedorov rescue Blue Jackets

Dec 27, 2006 - 7:48 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Sergei Fedorov prolonged the contest to enable David Vyborny to score the clincher in overtime.

Vyborny netted two goals - including the game-winner in the extra session - and Fedorov added two more tallies as the Columbus Blue Jackets, who rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 5-4 triumph over the Boston Bruins.

Columbus won for the fifth time in six home games and ended Boston's three-game winning streak in the only encounter of the campaign between the teams.

"That's called worst to best," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Second period was the worst period we have played all year and the third period was the best. ... In the second period, panic set in. The third period, we played with great composure. We used the whole length of the ice."

Vyborny completed his second multi-goal game of the season on a breakaway with 1:44 remaining in overtime when he lifted the puck over goaltender Tim Thomas' glove for his ninth tally of the campaign.

"I just tried to be focused and try to do something," Vyborny said. "I just tried to wait and then I just threw a shot on goal and it went in."

"It was a bad change (on the breakaway)," Boston coach Dave Lewis said. "Everybody can't change at once. You just can't do that. (Brad Stuart) was just trying to get the puck out. ... He has to have someone back to support him but unfortunately everyone was at the bench."

Boston jumped to a 4-2 lead before Vyborny capped a 2-on-1 break by lifting a backhander of defenseman Aaron Johnson's feed under the crossbar with 2:32 left in the second period.

Fedorov, the 1994 Hart Trophy winner, tied the game for the Blue Jackets during a 6-on-3 skating advantage with 23 seconds remaining in regulation with a backhander from the right faceoff circle inside the right goal post.

"I knew that I would have (Rick) Nash at the net so I really didn't have to go," Fedorov said. "Because I was not comfortable for (Vyborny) to shoot, I stayed on my off-side wing and he found me through the crowd. All I needed to do was swing my stick and get it on net. It went in. It was great."

"It's tough when you add a sixth person out there," Thomas said. "I couldn't see anything. I didn't know where he was passing to. I didn't know if someone was going to one-time it from the slot area, or what. You lose the puck totally behind the pile. By the time I figured out where it was going, it was too late."

Jason Chimera netted his seventh tally in the first period and netminder Fredrik Norrena made 22 saves for Columbus.

Wayne Primeau, Stanislav Chistov and Patrice Bergeron scored consecutive goals and Thomas stopped 37 shots for the Bruins.

"It's hard to win on the road," Lewis said. "The third period, the difference was the 6-on-3 goal. We had to kill it off to start overtime as well. But a point is good for us."
