Doan, Roenick, Joseph help Coyotes stomp Sharks

Dec 31, 2006 - 6:41 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan is turning into a one-man wrecking crew against the San Jose Sharks.

Doan had a goal and four assists, Jeremy Roenick recorded his 10th career hat trick and Curtis Joseph posted his 48th career shutout as the Coyotes romped past the Sharks, 8-0, for a sweep of a home-and-home series.

In Thursday's 3-2 triumph at San Jose, Doan picked up a goal and an assist for Phoenix. In this one, he netted his eighth tally of the season and set up four others for his second career five-point effort.

"The first period, we were outshot, 19-6, and we were completely dominated," Doan said. "We couldn't even get out of our zone. We have been on the losing end in a lot of those, and once it seems to get going, it seems to be easier."

"We are very fragile right now," said San Jose coach Ron Wilson, whose club has lost four straight games. "That was probably our best first period in a month, and we came out of it down, 3-0. Unfortunately, we surrendered, and I don't like that."

Joseph finished with 40 saves to record his first shutout of the season. The veteran stopped 19 shots in the first period, four in the second and 17 in the third en route to his 437th career victory, tying him with Hall of Famer Jacques Plante for fifth place on the all-time list.

"Those guys invented goaltending and masks, so when you get mentioned in the same sentence as Jacques Plante, it is a great honor," Joseph said. "There was no question I was seeing (the puck) real well, and the defense was letting me see it. That is always the key for me, seeing the puck."

"Curtis was sensational," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "The score after one was a little flattering for us. Curtis picked up right where he left off in San Jose. Although we scored some good goals, he was the difference in the first period."

Roenick opened the scoring at 3:18 of the first period and tacked on a pair of goals late in the third for the Coyotes, who have earned points in each of their last four games (3-0-1).

"I didn't think I had another goal in me, to tell you the truth," said Roenick, who entered with just one tally in 31 games this season. "There were times I was questioning if I had many games left. When they told me I was in tonight, it was great for my confidence. My confidence has been shot for a long time.

"It doesn't help when you have been playing on the fourth line and miss games as a healthy scratch. Wayne and I are in agreement with what is going on, and you roll with the punches."

Evgeni Nabokov, whose entered with the second-best goals-against average (2.09) in the league, was pulled with 4:49 to go in the first period after allowing three goals on six shots.

San Jose, which won the first two meetings of the season with Phoenix, has dropped three of its last four games overall.

"This has to be it for us, we have to turn the corner right now," Sharks captain Patrick Marleau said. "All the great teams go through hard times, and hopefully this is our bump in the road."
