Hossa's shootout goal lifts Rangers over Devils
Jan 3, 2007 - 5:44 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Marcel Hossa put some thought into his shootout attempt and it paid off.Hossa scored in the eighth round of the shootout to lift the New York Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
The victory was New York's second straight after seven consecutive defeats.
Hossa scored the goal when he skated in and deked New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur before flipping the puck over his blocker.
"I was just trying to focus on what I have to do, and I was watching him (Brodeur) on what he (was going to do," Hossa said. "I was thinking about going five-hole but maybe my brother (Marian) scored too many goals on him five-hole, so right now, I just did a different thing, so I'm happy."
New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist clinched the win when he denied New Jersey's Travis Zajac.
"As shootout is a shootout," Brodeur said. "It's definitely disappointing not to come out on top. You have got to be somewhat happy about getting this point. We played as hard as we could, but we lost in the skill competition."
"It feels good," Lundqvist said. "I was a little bit frustrated on the way I played in the shootout in the past. This game meant a lot for us. It was real nice to get the win finally. Lucky for me, we had a lot of good shooters."
Michael Nylander, Brendan Shanahan and Matt Cullen also scored in the shootout for the Rangers.
Zach Parise, Patrik Elias and John Madden scored in the shootout for the Devils.
New Jersey's Jamie Langenbrunner tied the game, 2-2, at 15:48 of the third period on the power play when he backhanded a rebound past Lundqvist.
Petr Prucha had given the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 9:05 of the third period when defenseman Karel Rachunek's shot from the point deflected off Jaromir Jagr's skate and Prucha's stick past Brodeur.
"I was just in the right place in the right time," Prucha said. "We needed the two points, and we let them tie the game. But still, we got two points, so we are happy right now."
The loss snapped New Jersey's three-game win streak.
"That's the way it goes," New Jersey center Scott Gomez said. "You just got to let this one go. You want to establish the points. You can't dwell on this."
