Blues can tie league record for consecutive first periods
Jan 4, 2007 - 3:46 PM Chicago (17-17-5) at St. Louis (12-20-7) 8:00 pm ESTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- One thing St. Louis Blues coach Andy Murray has instilled in his team is to not fall behind early.
St. Louis can tie a league record with 12 consecutive scoreless opening periods Thursday when they host the Chicago Blackhawks for the seventh time this season.
The Blues, who are 5-3-3 since Murray replace Mike Kitchen, can match the mark set by the Los Angeles Kings in 1974.
St. Louis aims to rebound from a 4-1 loss here to the Blackhawks on Tuesday. Keith Tkachuk opened the scoring with a power-play goal - his 11th tally - for St. Louis, which remains last in the Western Conference in wins (12) and points (31).
Martin Havlat netted his 13th goal, Jeff Hamilton added his 11th and Peter Bondra scored the 501st of his career for the Blackhawks, who have won four of the six encounters against the Blues this season.
Chicago is 10-5-3 since Denis Savard replaced Trent Yawney as coach and are playing the finale of a three-game road trip.
