Sabres can overtake Ducks for league's best record

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres are continuing to reap the benefits of their prolific first half of the season.

Buffalo can become the first team to win 30 games this season when it meets the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Sabres top the league in victories (29) and goals (158) and are second in points (61), one behind the Anaheim Ducks, who meet the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. Buffalo's record has led to coach Lindy Ruff's selection as Eastern Conference coach for the All-Star game on January 24 in Dallas.

Maxim Afinogenov and Jason Pominville each scored their 19th goals of the season for the Sabres, who had their four-game winning streak stopped with Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Pittsburgh has won its last two contests after a five-game losing streak and will try to end a five-game skid against Buffalo.

Sidney Crosby scored twice and added an assist, Mark Recchi set up two tallies and Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves for the Penguins in Tuesday's 3-0 triumph over Carolina.

Crosby leads the league in assists (42) and points (61), while Evgeni Malkin tops all rookies with 37 points in 34 games.
