Bruins try to shurg off embarrassing loss

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins had played well in winning four straight games against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but that has changed.

The Bruins, who have lost two straight to the Maple Leafs while getting blasted, try to regroup when they host the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Boston was routed by the Leafs, 5-1, on Monday and were pounded even worse, 10-1, by Toronto on Saturday. The usually reliable Tim Thomas had a disastrous evening, allowing eight goals on 31 shots.

Thomas clearly emerged as Boston's number one goaltender early in the season, and has been reasonably steady. He is 17-10-3 with a 3.26 goals-against average for Boston, which is only 1-3-1 in its last five games.

The Flyers, whose 26 points is lowest in the Eastern Conference, have actually been playing better lately, although they did have their three-game win streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Eric Meloche scored his first goal of the season for Philadelphia while Mike York added an unassisted tally and Robert Esche, who had his three-game win streak snapped, finished with 26 saves.

Philadelphia center Peter Forsberg missed the game with a groin injury, and is supposed to be out 7-to-10 days.
