Capitals try to take advantage of a rare home game

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Capitals try to take advantage of a rare home game when they host the Florida Panthers on Friday.

The Capitals, who just concluded a four-game road trip in which they went 1-3-0, play three of their next four on the road.

The good news for Washington is it comes off a 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. Alexander Semin and Chris Clark each led the Capitals with two goals.

Washington center Alex Ovechkin scored his 29th goal to extend his points streak to eight games.

The left wing, who has four goals and 10 assists during his streak, is near the top of the league stats in two categories. His 29 goals and 64 points are both tied for second in the NHL.

Florida, which pounded Washington, 7-3, on Saturday, tries to snap a two-game losing streak. Center Stephen Weiss, who had an assist in Florida's 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, had the hat trick in Saturday's win over Washington.

Weiss, who had 10 points in his 19 games in November and December, has eight points in eight games in January.
