Lundqvist stops 30 shots as Rangers blank Bruins

Sep 28, 2006 - 1:50 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Henrik Lundqvist appears intent on proving last season was not a fluke.

Lundqvist stopped 30 shots and Adam Hall scored the game's only goal as the New York Rangers edged the Boston Bruins, 1-0, in a preseason contest.

As a rookie last season, Lundqvist went 30-12-9 with a 2.24 goals-against average and finished third in the voting for the Vezina Trophy. He also helped Sweden win the gold medal at the 2006 Olympics.

He was just as sharp Wednesday as he stopped eight shots in the first period, 10 in the second and 12 in the third. In the final minute, he made a nice save to deny Glen Murray and preserve the lead.

Counterpart Tim Thomas was nearly as good, stopping 27 shots. But he was beaten with 4:29 left in the second period, surrendering Hall's tally off a rebound after stopping the initial shot by Martin Straka from inside the right faceoff circle.

Rangers center Michael Nylander and left wing Brendan Shanahan both sat out with groin strains. Backup goaltender Kevin Weekes and superstar Jaromir Jagr also did not play as they continue to nurse injuries but are expected to take the ice this weekend.

Defenseman Brad Stuart had four shots to lead the Bruins, who succesfully killed seven power plays by the Rangers but failed to cash in on four of their own.
