Stastny, Brunette lead Avalanche past Stars

Sep 28, 2006 - 3:33 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Rookie Paul Stastny is doing his best to live up to his father's standards.

Stastny collected two assists and Andrew Brunette scored a goal and set up two others to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-3 preseason victory over the Dallas Stars.

After scoring in the shootout of Monday's win over the Detroit Red Wings, Stastny - the son of Hall of Famer Peter Stastny - used some accurate passing to lead the Avalanche to their fourth triumph in five preseason contests.

Dallas took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Jussi Jokinen and defenseman Jaroslav Modry before Paul Stastny and Brunette combined to set up Milan Hejduk, who beat goaltender Mike Smith at 9:47 of the opening session.

Brunette fed Tyler Arnason for a power-play tally moments later before scoring with 3:29 remaining in the first to give Colorado a 3-2 edge.

Mike Modano tied the contest with the man advantage when his shot got past netminder Peter Budaj with 42 seconds to go in the opening session. However, Paul Stastny connected with Ian Laperriere for a power-play goal at 3:38 of the third period as the Avalanche took a 4-3 lead.

Antti Laaksonen added a power-play tally with 6:36 left for Colorado, which eliminated Dallas in five games in the Western Conference quarterfinals last season.

Colorado captain Joe Sakic sat out with a hip flexor, while Dallas' Eric Lindros did not play because of a strained groin.
