Blues hope to continue midseason surge against Red Wings

Jan 26, 2007 - 6:08 PM Detroit (30-14-5) at St. Louis (19-21-8) 8:00 pm EST

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Blues had quite a turnaround in the first half of the season. They can only hope it continues in the second half.

The surging Blues shoot for their fourth straight win Friday when they host the Detroit Red Wings in a Central Division contest.

Arguably one of the NHL's worst teams over the first 2 1/2 months of the season, St. Louis has won 12 of its last 16 games and is just eight points outside of a postseason berth.

The Blues have been outstanding under new coach Andy Murray, who was hired December 12.

All-Star Bill Guerin has enjoyed an outstanding campaign, scoring team highs of 20 goals and 35 points. The right wing had two assists in the West's 12-9 victory Wednesday.

Detroit dropped its last two games prior to the All-Star break and fell six points behind first-place Nashville (34-12-3) in the division standings.

But the flu bug has bit the Red Wings. Centers Robert Lang and Kris Draper will miss Friday's game because of the illness.

The Red Wings have won three of their four meetings with St. Louis this season, including a 4-3 overtime victory in Detroit on December 7.

All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom had a goal and an assist in the contest while Pavel Datsyuk netted the game-winning tally in the extra session.
