Lupul notches three points as Oliers dump Canucks

Sep 28, 2006 - 4:46 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Joffrey Lupul is looking to thrive for his hometown team this season.

Lupul scored a goal and set up two others and Jarret Stoll added a tally and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers concluded the home portion of their preseason schedule with a 5-4 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks.

After collecting 28 goals and 25 assists with the Anaheim Ducks last season, Lupul was acquired by the Oilers in the deal involving former Hart and Norris Trophy winner Chris Pronger. The Edmonton native led his new team to its fifth win in six preseason contests.

Lupul opened the scoring at 2:52 of the first period, when he lifted a wrist shot past goaltender Wade Flaherty for his second preseason goal.

Stoll gave Edmonton a 2-0 lead when he intercepted Alexander Edler's pass and scored on a breakaway, beating Flaherty with a low shot to the glove side.

Alexandre Burrows cut the deficit to 2-1 when he beat netminder Dwayne Roloson at 8:15 of the second period. However, Lupul set up Fernando Pisani and Ryan Smyth for power-play goals in a 3:31 span of the middle session for a 4-2 edge.

After Ryan Kesler halved the deficit for Vancouver with 3:56 left in the second, Marc-Antoine Pouliot gave Edmonton a 5-2 bulge by firing defenseman Steve Staios' feed off the goalpost and into the net with 32 seconds remaining in the session.

The Canucks lost for the fifth time in six preseason games after being outshot, 21-18, and going just 1-for-9 with the man advantage.
