Flyers hope to avoid second 10-game slide of season

ATLANTA (Ticker) - A disappointing and painful season continues to get even longer for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Philadelphia tries to avoid its second 10-game losing streak of the season - which would tie the franchise mark for longest skid - when it meets the Atlanta Thrashers on Sunday.

Ranked last in the league in wins, home victories (three), points (27) and goals (115), the Flyers were outscored, 41-19 in a 10-game drought from December 2-27.

After road victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders, Philadelphia has been outscored, 38-19, in its last nine losses since January 4.

The Flyers were outshot, 35-18, in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to the New York Rangers. Joni Pitkanen scored his second goal of the season and Peter Forsberg collected his 21st assist.

Atlanta has won four of its last five outings after a five-game losing streak and has a six-point advantage over Carolina in the Southeast Division.

After sitting out most of the second period because he jammed his leg in the endboards, Marian Hossa scored his 31st goal in the third session and set up Ilya Kovalchuk for the game-winner in overtime as the Thrashers posted a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders.

Philadelphia has won 18 of the last 23 matchups against Atlanta, including a 3-2 shootout triumph on October 26 for John Stevens' first victory as Flyers' coach.
