Sakic, Avalanche visit Red Wings in Western Conference clash

DETROIT (Ticker) -- All-Star Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche began the season's second half with a devastating loss. They hope to bounce back against an old foe.

The Avalanche shoot for their third win in four games Sunday when they visit the Detroit Red Wings in a matchup of Western Conference rivals.

Colorado, which is ninth in the conference playoff chase, squandered a two-goal lead in Friday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Phoenix Coyotes.

The captain of the Western All-Star team, Sakic scored his team-leading 21st goal but was stymied on a potential game-tying shot in the shootout.

Sakic and the Avalanche hope to bounce back against a Red Wings club which has lost three straight contests, including Friday's 2-1 overtime loss at St. Louis.

Johan Franzen scored the lone goal for Detroit, which has tallied just three times during its losing streak.

The Avalanche and Red Wings have split their two meetings this season, with Colorado posting a 3-1 home victory the last time the teams squared off on January 20.
