Coyotes-Oilers Preview

Nov 22, 2009 - 8:06 PM By ANTHONY GIORNALISTA STATS Senior Writer

Phoenix (13-9-1) at Edmonton (9-11-3), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Tough defense has helped the Phoenix Coyotes rebound from a tough stretch. They certainly can't afford to have a letdown in intensity at Edmonton.

With a chance to win consecutive games for the first time in over three weeks, the Coyotes look to end their struggles on the road against the Oilers on Monday night.

Phoenix (13-9-1) has earned five points in its last three games following a 2-5-0 slump. A 3-1 win over Philadelphia on Saturday night gives the Coyotes a chance to win two straight for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Oct. 28-31.

Phoenix has given up six goals over its last three games after surrendering four or more in five of seven contests. The Coyotes have killed 14 consecutive power plays dating back to a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night, when the Lightning went 1 for 6.

At Edmonton, though, Phoenix has had a terrible time defensively in recent years. The Coyotes have lost four straight at Rexall Place, with the Oilers (9-11-3) scoring 23 goals during that span, and are 6-19-2 with three ties there since the start of the 1993-94 season.

Phoenix might be without defenseman Ed Jovanovski for the latest matchup. He's close to returning after missing seven straight games with a lower-body injury, but his status for Monday is uncertain.

Jovanovski's injury has given Keith Yandle more ice time, and the fourth-year defenseman has taken advantage. He scored against the Flyers and has two goals and three assists in his last seven games.

Matthew Lombardi added a power-play goal and an assist against Philadelphia, making an immediate impact after missing three games with an upper-body injury.

The veteran center has two goals and an assist in his last two games against Edmonton.

Shane Doan, who leads the Coyotes with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists), added an empty-net goal to snap a five-game scoring drought.

Doan tied Thomas Steen for third place on the franchise's all-time list with 264 goals. He has two goals and seven assists in his last seven games against the Oilers.

Edmonton has lost five of six and eight of 10 after starting 6-2-1. The Oilers have allowed nine goals in their last two games, including a 5-2 loss to Chicago on Saturday night.

"We have to refocus and be a lot better than that," Edmonton goaltender Jeff Deslauriers said.

Oilers goalie Jeff Deslauriers gave up five goals on 30 shots. He was a surprise starter against the Blackhawks after Nikolai Khabibulin experienced game-day back problems.

Khabibulin's status is uncertain. He has a 3.03 goals-against average after posting a 2.33 GAA in 42 games for Chicago last season.

Deslauriers has given up nine goals in his last two games after surrendering six in his first three. He has never faced Phoenix.
