Ovechkin can lift Capitals to .500 mark vs. Senators

OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Even with Alex Ovechkin's stellar play, the Washington Capitals have been inconsistent for much of the campaign.

The Capitals try to win for just the third time in eight games and reach the .500 mark Tuesday when they visit the Ottawa Senators in their final regular-season meeting.

Last season's Calder Trophy winner, the 21-year-old Ovechkin is tied with Anaheim's Teemu Selanne and Atlanta's Marian Hossa for the league lead in goals (31) and is second to Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby in points (68).

Washington gained a split of a home-and-home series with the defending-champion Carolina Hurricanes with Saturday's 7-3 triumph. Alexander Semin scored twice and Ovechkin added a goal and an assist for the Capitals.

The Senators have won seven of their last nine contests and are 12-4-1 since December 23. Looking for their 10th consecutive 30-win season, they are 14-11-1 at home.

Ottawa looks to bounce back after Monday's 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, which dropped it into third place in the Northeast Division, one point behind Montreal. Chris Phillips scored in the opening minute for the Senators.

The Senators dropped the first two matchups against the Capitals before receiving two goals from Mike Comrie in a 5-2 home victory January 16.
