Blue Jackets can win their fifth straight game vs. Oilers

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have picked up the pace of late and are closing in on the .500 mark

Columbus can tie a season high with its fifth consecutive victory Wednesday when they continue a three-game Western road trip against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Blue Jackets used a 4-0 triumph over Edmonton on December 2 to propel them on their last five-game winning streak, which was stopped by the Phoenix Coyotes in a shootout 12 days later.

Columbus is coming off Tuesday's 3-2 shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Nikolai Zherdev netted the clincher and Anson Carter scored his 200th career goal for the Blue Jackets, who are 16-1-4 when scoring first.

Concluding a five-game homestand, Edmonton has won three of its last five contests and is eight points behind the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks in the Northwest Division.

The Oilers are coming off Saturday's 4-3 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings. Ryan Smyth scored two goals and combined with linemates Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff to record all 12 points for Edmonton.
