Frolov helps Kings end road woes in rout of Panthers

Feb 4, 2007 - 5:30 AM SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Kings were tired of being punching bags on the road. Alexander Frolov and Michael Cammalleri decided to punch back.

Frolov and Cammalleri each scored two goals and set up two others as the Kings rolled to a 7-0 triumph over the Florida Panthers, who suffered their worst loss in franchise history.

Konstantin Pushkarev, Dustin Brown and Jamie Lundmark also tallied for Los Angeles, which entered the contest with a league-worst 6-18-0 road record.

"We're going to focus on every game and try to win every game," Frolov said. "If we play like we did tonight, I think we can do it. ... Just play a solid team game and not make a lot of mistakes."

Just 4:19 into the game, Frolov completed a pass to Cammalleri, who was being contained by a defender. However, he managed to get enough of his stick on the puck to deflect it past goaltender Ed Belfour for a 1-0 lead.

Pushkarev scored an unassisted goal midway through the first period and Brown whacked in his own rebound during a power play with 6:05 remaining in the session for a 3-0 bulge.

Frolov tallied at 3:45 of the second, taking a cross-ice pass from Sean Avery and beating netminder Alex Auld, who replaced Belfour with six minutes left in the opening session after the veteran yielded three goals on just six shots.

"I thought switching goalies early was an opportunity at that point to rally the troops," Panthers coach Jacques Martin said. "I wanted to give Auld a chance, but we just couldn't seem to get over the hurdle."

After Lundmark skated in from the left side and put a backhander over the glove of Auld to give the Kings a 5-0 bulge with 6:04 left in the second, Frolov made it 6-0 just 36 seconds later. The Russian pounced on a turnover in the offensive zone and beat Auld between the pads with a slap shot for his 28th goal of the season.

It was the seventh two-goal performance of the campaign for Frolov, who rolled off three in a row from November 13-18.

Cammalleri tallied at 6:35 of the final period for the Kings, who posted their largest margin of victory this season.

"We have started to play well but weren't getting results," Cammalleri said. "Tonight, we saw some results. Hopefully, we can build on that."

"I wish I had an answer for this loss," Panthers left wing Martin Gelinas said. "It's just unacceptable to have a result like this. It just seems like we gave up a few goals and then the floodgates opened."

Sean Burke, who was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on January 18, stopped 40 shots in his sixth consecutive start. The 40-year-old made 11 saves in both the first and third periods and 18 in the second for his 38th career shutout.

"When the game's kind of out of reach and you get down to the last four or five minutes, you think about the shutout," Burke said. "It's such a good thing for the team. You win 7-1, 7-2, it's a great victory, but when you don't give up anything, everybody feels a part of that."

"Our goalie was good, and when you score seven goals, that's more than enough to win on a lot of nights," Kings coach Marc Crawford added.

Avery and Derek Armstrong each had two assists for Los Angeles, which won for only the second time in its last nine road games.
