Koivu, Rolston star as Wild double up Blues
Sep 29, 2006 - 3:04 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- It appears things have not changed much for the St. Louis Blues.Mikko Koivu scored two goals and set up another and Brian Rolston had a tally and two assists as the Minnesota Wild recorded a 4-2 preseason win over the Blues.
After finishing with a league-worst 57 points last season, the Blues underwent a major overhaul during the offseason, which includes new ownership, an inexperienced team president and an abundance of free-agent signings.
While St. Louis is hoping the changes translate into a winning campaign, the preseason has been anything but successful. With Thursday's loss, the Blues dropped to 1-4-0 and have scored just 11 goals in the five games.
They netted the first one against the Wild as defenseman Barret Jackman tallied with 2:56 remaining in the first period. But blue-liner Martin Skoula drew Minnesota even at 5:34 of the second and Koivu scored power-play goals 2:21 apart later in the session to give the Wild a 3-1 advantage.
Lee Stempniak got St. Louis within one at 4:37 of the third before Rolston restored the two-goal bulge while on the man advantage less than three minutes later.
Pierre-Marc Bouchard collected three assists and Niklas Backstrom made 26 saves for Minnesota.
Defenseman Jamie Rivers set up both goals for the Blues, who saw netminder Manny Legace stop 19 shots.
No one has shouted yet.
