Laraque burns former team as Coyotes edge Oilers
Sep 29, 2006 - 4:55 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers may be having second thoughts about letting go of Georges Laraque.Laraque capped a comeback late in the third period as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied for a 3-2 preseason triumph over the Oilers.
A second-round pick of Edmonton in 1995, Laraque emerged as one of the most feared fighters in the NHL during his eight seasons with the Oilers. But the 6-3, 243-pounder was allowed to leave as a free agent, signing a two-year contract with the Coyotes in July.
The tough guy made his former club pay Thursday, scoring his first goal of the preseason with 3:56 remaining in the third to snap a 2-2 tie.
The tally capped a big comeback for the Coyotes, who trailed, 2-0, after 20 minutes. Ladislav Nagy and Patrick Fischer netted power-play goals less than three minutes apart in the second period to forge a tie.
Ed Jovanovski registered two assists and former Oiler Mike Morrison made 22 saves for Phoenix, which played without Owen Nolan.
Prospects Alexei Mikhnov and Rob Schremp tallied for Edmonton.
