Zetterberg leads Red Wings to 11th straight home win
Feb 8, 2007 - 4:41 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg's lucky break enabled the Detroit Red Wings to prolong their home dominance.Zetterberg snapped a third-period tie with his second goal of the game and Dominik Hasek recorded his 30th victory of the season as the Red Wings extended their home winning streak to 11 games with a 4-2 triumph over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Detroit won its fifth straight contest overall and has not lost at home since December 12 against Ottawa. The Red Wings, who have outscored their opponents, 44-17, during that stretch, raised their home record this season to 20-3-3.
"It's always nice to win," Zetterberg said. "It's easy to come down to the rink and practice, and stuff like that. We've been working hard, and that's why we're winning games."
"We don't really look at (the streak) too much," Red Wings center Justin Williams said. "We just want to take care of some of those games."
Zetterberg completed his third multi-goal effort of the campaign with his 100th career tally at 3:22 of the third. The Swede unleashed a slap shot from the right point that deflected off a defender's skate in the slot and past former Red Wings goaltender Curtis Joseph, giving Detroit a 3-2 edge.
"(Captain Nicklas Lidstrom) put it on the post, and I think I got it from that," Zetterberg said. "I tried to put it on net and I think it hit their (defenseman)."
"He's a pretty special player," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said of Zetterberg. "Guys like (Alex) Ovechkin and (Sidney) Crosby, who is probably the best player in the game today, but this guy right here is one of the elite players, and he probably doesn't get enough credit for being an elite player. He's definitely in that category."
The Red Wings snapped a 1-1 tie with 3:33 remaining in the second session, when Zetterberg skated in from the right side of the net, faked a wraparound attempt and lifted the puck over a sprawling Joseph for his 23rd tally.
"I came 1-on-1 against the D and then I didn't have much to shoot at first," Zetterberg said. "I tried to hold on to it and go around the net, and (Joseph) tried to pokecheck on the far post, but he missed it."
However, Phoenix tied it with just 17 seconds remaining in the period as captain Shane Doan raced in on a 2-on-1 rush and slid the puck past Hasek, who left the net to cut down the angle.
Owen Nolan opened the scoring for the Coyotes midway through the first period with his 13th goal, a spinning backhander in the slot that sneaked inside the right goalpost.
Robert Lang netted his 14th tally at 4:51 of the second session, when he converted defenseman Brett Lebda's centering feed from the left faceoff circle to tie it at 1-1.
Pavel Datsyuk tallied with a minute to go in the third and the 42-year-old Hasek made 20 saves to become the oldest goaltender in league history to post a 30-win season.
Joseph stopped 44 shots for Phoenix, which has dropped four of its last six.
"Let's be honest, they deserved to win the hockey game," Gretzky said. "We deserved what we got. We didn't have enough of our upper-echelon players show up. It seems like the same five or six skaters play hard every night. Right now, we have too many passengers."
"We didn't deserve to be in that game." Doan agreed. "They outplayed us for pretty much the whole game, but we had an incredible goaltender tonight. Whenever you get that type of goaltending, you should expect to win the game because it's such an advantage. We let (Joseph) down."
