Red Wings can take over top record in West vs. Blues

Feb 8, 2007 - 4:24 PM Detroit (35-14-6) at St. Louis (21-25-8) 8:00 pm EST

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- With a terrific run of success in the past five weeks, the Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of the Western Conference's best record.

The Red Wings try to win their sixth consecutive game and move past the Nashville Predators for the top spot in the West on Thursday when they visit the St. Louis Blues.

Thanks in large part to its 11-game home winning streak, Detroit has won 10 of its last 13 contests and can move into first place in the West with a win and a loss by Nashville to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Red Wings prolonged their streak with Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Henrik Zetterberg scored twice, including his 100th career tally, and has five goals and seven assists in his last five contests.

Captain Nicklas Lidstrom had one assist against Phoenix and is one goal away from his 200th for Detroit.

Since extending their winning streak to four games with a 2-1 overtime triumph over the Red Wings on January 26, the Blues have dropped four of their last five and are completing a three-game homestand.

St. Louis is coming off Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ryan Johnson netted his seventh tally in the second period for the Blues, who limited Toronto to 16 shots on goal.

Detroit is 4-0-2 against St. Louis this season, including last Friday's 5-3 triumph highlighted by a pair of goals by Tomas Holmstrom.
