Capitals look for first home win vs. Kings in nine years
Feb 8, 2007 - 4:28 PM Los Angeles (18-30-8) at Washington (22-25-8) 7:00 pm ESTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Although he ranks among the league's top scorers, All-Star Alex Ovechkin is in the midst of his first real career slump.
Ovechkin tries to overcome his three-game drought without a point when the Washington Capitals host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.
The reigning Calder Trophy winner, Ovechkin is tied with Tampa Bay's Vincent Lecavalier for third in points (70), and has 33 goals to trail him by one for the league's top spot.
Ovechkin needed 136 games to record his first three-game scoring drought. Only Kent Nilsson (183) and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux (735) had longer streaks from the start of their careers.
Washington is coming off Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins. Brooks Laich scored his sixth goal and Eric Fehr added his second for the Capitals.
The Kings are 2-8-3 in their last 13 games and are last in the Western Conference in wins and points (44). They are just 7-18-1 on the road and are two goals shy of becoming the first team in the West to give up 200.
Los Angeles continued its five-game road trip with Tuesday's 3-2 shootout defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Mike Weaver scored his first career goal and Derek Armstrong registered his ninth of the season.
Although the Capitals are 5-1-1 in their last seven home contests, they have not defeated the Kings here in five encounters since April 4, 1998.
