Hurricanes hold last playoff spot in East

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Carolina Hurricanes begin a busy home stretch Tuesday when they host the Los Angeles Kings.

Clinging to the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes play five of their next seven games at home starting with this contest. Carolina has 63 points, just two ahead of ninth-place Toronto.

The red-hot Ray Whitney again scored Saturday as the Hurricanes concluded a three-game road trip with a 5-4 loss to Minnesota.

Whitney has four goals in his last two games and nine points in his last four contests. He recorded a natural hat trick in a 1:40 span in a 5-2 victory over Boston on Thursday.

The Kings enter the contest last in the Western Conference with 47 points.

However, the Kings are coming off an impressive 4-1 victory over West-leading Nashville on Saturday.

Rookie Anze Kopitar scored twice against the Predators, giving him 16 tallies and 34 assists on the season. He is second in scoring among rookies to Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin, who has 63 points.
