Slumping Canadiens host Panthers

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The slumping Montreal Canadiens have stopped challenging for the top spot in the Northeast Division, but they are scrambling for a playoff berth.

The Canadiens host the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

Montreal is 16 points behind the first-place Buffalo Sabres. But the Canadiens are tied for sixth with Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canadiens are 1-4-1 in their last six games. Montreal has struggled offensively with just 15 goals in that span.

Two of the Canadiens' offensive stars are having subpar seasons. Captain Saku Koivu had two goals in his last 24 games. Alexei Kovalev had 65 points last season, but just 38 this campaign. He has one goal and two assists in his last eight contests.

The Panthers are 2-3-1 in their last six and come off a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Florida is 10 points out of the final playoff berth.

Martin Gelinas had a goal and an assist against the Kings. He has four goals in his last five games.
