Beech's late tally lifts Capitals past Flyers

Sep 30, 2006 - 2:05 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers did a fine job containing reigning Calder Trophy winner Alexander Ovechkin. However, they were unable to stop Kris Beech.

Beech scored with 3:41 remaining in the third period to snap a tie and give the Washington Capitals a 1-0 preseason triumph over the Flyers.

Tied for third in the NHL with 52 goals last season, Ovechkin unleashed three shots in the first period and another three in the third but was denied all six times. The 21-year-old Russian has not recorded a point in three exhibition contests.

Philadelphia outshot Washington, 14-3, in the middle session but could not solve goaltender Brent Johnson. The Capitals held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the third before Beech finally found a way to beat Robert Esche, scoring on a wraparound late in the period.

Ben Clymer and Matt Pettinger picked up assists and Johnson stopped 26 shots, including nine in the opening session, to record the shutout.

Esche made 32 saves for the Flyers, who lost defenseman Denis Gauthier to an undisclosed injury with just under 8 1/2 minutes left in the second.
