Sim's late charge gives Thrashers win over Predators

Sep 30, 2006 - 3:35 AM ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After scoring the goal that led to the shootout, Jon Sim netted the one that decided it.

Sim converted a power play with three seconds left in the third period before netting the decisive tally in the fourth round of the shootout, giving the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 preseason triumph over the Nashville Predators.

After a scoreless first period, Atlanta took control as veteran Scott Mellanby scored at 5:09 of the second and defenseman Steve McCarthy tallied midway through the session.

But the Predators stormed back with three straight goals, including defenseman Dan Hamhuis' second of the game with 98 seconds remaining in the third. But with blue-liner Vitaly Vishnevski serving a cross-checking penalty, Sim cashed in to draw the Thrashers even.

With each team having scored just once in three shootout attempts, Sim victimized Chris Mason on Atlanta's fourth chance, and J.P. Dumont was denied by Fred Brathwaite to seal the win.

Vyacheslav Kozlov set up all three goals and Mellanby added two assists for the Thrashers.

Paul Kariya had a goal and an assist and Josef Vasicek set up a pair of tallies for Nashville.
