Perry's shootout goal lifts Ducks over Kings
Feb 18, 2007 - 7:52 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Perry has not been able to score in regulation or overtime, but he made the most of his opportunity in a shootout.Perry scored in the fifth round of the bonus format to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 30 shots for Anaheim, which improved to 3-1-0 against Los Angeles this season.
"We were fortunate to get the extra point," Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere said. "I think both teams kind of deserved it, but that is just the way the wheel went today."
"You can never be happy if you don't get two points, and we don't ever want to be a team that's settling for a decent performance," Los Angeles coach Marc Crawford said. "We had our opportunities tonight, and we didn't capitalize."
After Mathieu Garon stopped three of Anaheim's first four attempts, Perry deked the goaltender and slid the puck between his pads for the winning tally. The right wing has not scored in his last 11 games, last tallying in a 6-2 loss to St. Louis on January 16.
"I just had to pick a shot and get him to commit and spread his legs," Perry said. "I kind of had a plan going in. In those situations, you kind of know what you want to do going into it."
"He faked the shot so he caught me," Garon said. "I went down, and he made me open my legs, then he shot it five-hole."
Los Angeles rookie Anze Kopitar forced overtime, tying the game at 2-2 with 5:14 left in the third period. The 19-year-old Slovenian took a pass from defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky and one-timed a shot over the glove of Giguere for his 17th goal.
Chris Kunitz had given the Ducks a 2-1 advantage at 5:48 of the period, when he jammed his own rebound past Garon. The tally snapped a 13-game goalless drought for the left wing, who had not scored since a 5-4 overtime loss to Nashville on January 9.
Kunitz's goal was his 19th of the season, matching his career high set last season.
Teemu Selanne also scored for Anaheim, collecting a rebound at the corner of the crease and flipping it over Garon at 3:22 of the middle period to forge a 1-1 tie. It was his 300th goal as a Duck, tying him with Paul Kariya for first place on the franchise list.
"Numbers, I don't really think about those things," Selanne said. "Obviously it's a nice compliment, and I know how Paul (Kariya) did great things for this franchise. I try to play well every night, and I'm lucky to play with great players."
Selanne also added an assist, giving "The Finnish Flash" seven goals and 14 assists in his last eight games against the Ducks.
Alexander Frolov scored his third goal in four games and Garon made 32 saves for the Kings, who have lost four of five.
Giguere improved to 4-1-0 with just 11 goals allowed against the Kings this season.
