Struggling Canadiens aim to snap skid
Feb 18, 2007 - 2:29 PM Montreal (29-25-6) at Columbus (23-30-5) 6:00 pm ESTCOLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Montreal Canadiens are falling out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and fast.
Montreal tries to snap a six-game losing streak when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.
The Canadiens are in 10th place, just two points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their slump is mainly due to a lack of offense. They have scored just nine goals in their six losses.
Montreal lost, 5-2, to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Defenseman Sheldon Souray and Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens, whose 173 goals are the second-fewest in the Eastern Conference.
The Blue Jackets snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. Gilbert Brule, Fredrik Modin and Sergei Fedorov each had a goal and an assist.
Goaltender Fredrik Norrena stopped 29 shots for his third career shutout. Norrena has won his last two starts while allowing only one goal. He stopped 24 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on February 8.
