Frolov, Kopitar lead Kings past Sharks
Sep 30, 2006 - 5:35 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Alexander Frolov and Anze Kopitar apparently are developing some chemistry.Kopitar set up Frolov at 4:52 of the opening period for the game's first goal and the Russian returned the favor less than four minutes later as the Los Angeles Kings skated to a 5-2 preseason win over the San Jose Sharks.
The 20th overall pick in the 2000 draft, Frolov has become one of Los Angeles' biggest offensive threats, surpassing the 20-goal plateau each of the last two seasons and setting a career high with 54 points in 2005-06. Kopitar, who was selected 11th overall in 2005, is hoping to become the first Slovenian to play in the NHL.
Less than five minutes into the game, Frolov put the rebound of Kopitar's shot past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov for a 1-0 lead. Just 3:47 later, Kopitar converted a pass from Frolov to double the advantage.
Frolov also assisted on star defenseman Rob Blake's power-play goal later in the first. Jeff Cowan and Sean Avery scored and former Shark Scott Thornton picked up an assist for the Kings.
Captain Patrick Marleau and Steve Bernier tallied for San Jose, which went 1-for-10 on the power play.
Jason LaBarbera made 17 saves for the Kings, while Nabokov turned aside 26 shots for the Sharks.
