Senators, Hurricanes complete home-and-home series

OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators seek to complete a sweep of a home-and-home series with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.

The Senators scored three third-period goals in just under nine minutes in a 4-2 triumph at Carolina on Tuesday. Anton Volchenkov, defenseman Wade Redden and Jason Spezza scored the third-period goals while goaltender Martin Gerber made 23 saves for Ottawa.

Spezza extended his points streak to eight games. He has six goals and eight assists in that stretch. Dany Heatley had a goal and an assist for Ottawa. The right wing has five goals and seven assists in his seven-game points streak.

After winning the Stanley Cup last season, the Hurricanes are in danger of missing the playoffs. They are one point behind the New York Islanders and the Montreal Canadiens for the final two spots.

Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour did not get a point against Ottawa in Tuesday's loss, but still has six goals and eight assists in his last 10 contests.

Before the trade deadline, the Senators acquired left wing Oleg Saprykin from the Phoenix Coyotes. Saprykin, the 11th overall pick in the 1999 draft, has 14 goals and 20 assists in 59 games this season.
