Drury nets game-winner as Sabres down Penguins
Oct 1, 2006 - 2:03 AM BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres look ready for the regular season.Chris Drury scored the winning goal midway through the third period as the Sabres skated to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final preseason game for both clubs.
Drury tallied off a feed from Ales Kotalik and Daniel Paille with nine minutes left in the third period as the Sabres overcame a one-goal deficit in the final period. Drury was cruising in the slot when he took the pass and beat goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury high to the glove side.
Buffalo trailed, 2-1, early in the session but tied it when Adam Mair scored at 3:34. Mair netted the overtime winner in Buffalo's 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday.
Defensemen Brian Campbell and Henrik Tallinder scored the other goals for Buffalo, which went 1-for-6 on the power play.
Michel Ouellet and Ryan Malone tallied for Pittsburgh, which was 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
Buffalo netminder Ryan Miller stopped 20 of 22 shots, while Fleury stopped 25 of 28 shots.
The Sabres, who won their last four preseason contests, open the regular season Wednesday at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina - the same location their 2005-06 season ended with a loss to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference finals.
The Penguins play their season opener Thursday, when they host the Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia Flyers.
