Flyers, Bruins look for help from new acquisitions

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers hope that a shake up at the trade deadline will help spark a turnaround.

The Flyers hope to have newly acquired goaltender Martin Biron when they visit the Boston Bruins on Thursday.

Holding the worst record in the NHL, Philadelphia (16-37-10) made several moves in the past few weeks to change the club's direction.

The Flyers made a big splash by dealing star center Peter Forsberg to Nashville on February 15. They also acquired defenseman Lasse Kukkonen and a third-round pick from Chicago for left wing Kyle Calder on Monday.

Biron, however, was Philadelphia's biggest acquisition. The netminder, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the season, lost his starting job in Buffalo but will likely take over for Flyers' goaltender Antero Niittymaki, who has just nine wins in 48 games.

The new acquisitions hope to provide a boost for Philadelphia, which has lost five straight contests, including a 6-5 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday. The Flyers have gone 0-for-15 on the power play during their skid.

Making a push for the playoffs, the Bruins also made two separate deals, acquiring Aaron Ward from the New York Rangers for fellow defenseman Paul Mara and Dennis Wideman from St. Louis for Brad Boyes on Tuesday.

Eight points out of a playoff spot, Boston is trying to remain afloat in the Eastern Conference.
