Sizzling Senators seek to extend points streak to 10 games

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Two teams going in opposite directions meet when the Ottawa Senators take on the slumping Atlanta Thrashers on Friday.

Ottawa, which is 8-0-1 in its last nine games, has climbed to within nine points of the first-place Buffalo Sabres in the Northeast Division.

The Thrashers are 2-5-1 in their last eight, and have slipped two points behind the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning in the Southeast Division.

Dany Heatley, a former Thrasher, has been on fire for Ottawa. He has seven goals and eight assists in his nine-game points streak. Jason Spezza is also rolling with seven goals and 10 assists in his nine-game points streak.

Atlanta made two trades as it hopes to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Thrashers acquired left wing Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis and defenseman Alexei Zhitnik from the New York Islanders just before the trade deadline.

Tkachuk has 20 goals and 23 assists in 62 games this season. Zhitnik has three goals and 11 assists in 32 contests.

The Thrashers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Marian Hossa scored the game-winner in the third period. He has three goals and five assists during his five-game points streak.
