Oilers hope to regroup vs. Flames in Northwest Division battle

Mar 3, 2007 - 4:38 PM Calgary (34-21-9) at Edmonton (30-29-6) 10:00 pm EST

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers are quickly fading from playoff contention.

The Oilers aim to regroup from consecutive shutouts when they host the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

The defending Western Conference champions, the Oilers currently are in 10th place, 11 points out of the final playoff spot. They are just 2-5-2 in their last nine games.

Edmonton dropped a 3-0 decision to the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday, the night Oilers legend Mark Messier's No. 11 was retired. The Oilers fell, 5-0, on Thursday to the Minnesota Wild.

Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson allowed three goals on 19 shots, and was pulled after two periods. Roloson is 2-5-1 and has allowed 20 goals in his last eight starts. However, the Oilers have scored just 13 goals in those outings.

The Flames are eighth in the West and hold a 10-point edge over the Colorado Avalanche for the final playoff berth.

Calgary is locked in a three-way battle for control of the Northwest Division with the Minnesota Wild and the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver leads with 79 points, Minnesota has 78 and Calgary 77.

The Flames are 4-1-1 in their last six and come off a 2-1 win over the Wild on Wednesday. Jarome Iginla scored the decisive shootout goal and has six tallies and eight assists in his last nine games.
